Cook County State's Attorney's Office Defends Sanctuary Ordinance at Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals
Chicago — Today, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office presented oral argument before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in U.S. v. Illinois, et al., a challenge to sanctuary policies implemented by Cook County, Chicago, the State of Illinois and other local jurisdictions. The CCSAO is defending Cook County’s Policy on Responding to ICE Detainers, which prohibits county employees from providing ICE information about an individual’s incarcerated status or release date.
State’s Attorney Eileen Burke issued the following statement after arguments concluded:
“The federal government should not be targeting people because of how they look or the language they speak. Sanctuary policies are meant to foster increased trust with law enforcement so they can protect everyone, including hardworking families who are contributing to our communities. The federal government’s challenge to the County’s sanctuary policies is baseless and yet another example of troubling overreach that threatens public safety.”
