Recognizing that sophisticated crime is no longer confined by geographic boundaries, State’s Attorney Burke formed the Multi-Jurisdiction Bureau (MJB) to effectively handle high-impact cases requiring increased collaboration with law enforcement agencies beyond Cook County. MJB prosecutes complex crimes involving firearms, narcotics, fraud, public corruption, and human trafficking.
MJB frequently works with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to leverage shared intelligence and resources. Among others, federal partners include:
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
- Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
- U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS)
- United States Secret Service
MJB also collaborates with regional coalitions that focus on specific areas, including the Chicago High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) and the Cook County Regional Organized Crime Task Force (CCROC).
Cases in the MJB follow a vertical prosecution model, enabling the same Assistant State’s Attorney or a small multi-disciplined team to stay with a matter from investigative review through sentencing. This approach ensures continuity, accountability, consistent communication, and strategic case development.
Composed of six distinct units, the MJB focuses on cases with the potential to cause long-term, systemic consequences throughout Cook County. The six units are:
- Financial/Cyber Crime
- Gun Crime Strategy
- Complex Narcotics
- Public Corruption
- Human Trafficking
- Asset Forfeiture
